Finding Omaha’s best ice cream

Cecil Zahm, Section editor

I recently set out to find the best ice cream spot in Omaha, here’s what I found…

Coneflower Creamery

Coneflower was by far my favorite ice cream. It’s located pretty centrally in Blackstone, and there’s a lot to do with friends in that area after going there. The whole shop was made to focus on creating original ice cream with fresh ingredients, and that definitely comes through.

The variety of flavors is great, and each time you go there they have something new and fun to try.

I ordered a small, which was four dollars for two scoops. The serving size gives you a decent portion for the price, and the fact that the small is two scoops allows you to try more of their unique flavors. I ordered the cookies and cream as well as the tart cherry crumble. Both ice creams were super flavorful, and they didn’t taste like stuff I could just go buy at the store. My favorite was the tart cherry crumble because of how well it balanced out the sourness of the cherries with the crumble and milky base. Overall, I definitely recommend Coneflower Creamery.

eCreamery

What I love about eCreamery is its location in Dundee. The shop is very cute, and good for taking photos with friends. But what I don’t like is that one small scoop is $3.25. I could deal with high prices at Coneflower Creamery because of their serving sizes and just how good their ice cream is, but I had a harder time trying to justify the prices at eCreamery. That’s not to say their ice cream is bad though. They always have a good selection of flavors, including some unique ones like lemon lavender. There’s also usually a vegan option on the menu.

I ordered the ice cream they made specifically for Central graduation, which was really very good. “Cones, Caps & Gowns” is cake mix ice cream with chocolate covered waffle pieces mixed in. I would recommend getting this flavor while you still can, because not only is it tasty – but also because one dollar of every pint sold goes to the Central High School Foundation.

Ted and Wally’s

Right in the heart of the old market, Ted and Wally’s is a great place to go after school with friends. The ice cream here is churned in house, and they pride themselves on their quality of ingredients. They usually have some fun old-fashioned flavors, but they sell at a little over five dollars for a single scoop. I tried the sarsaparilla, malt, and praline. I enjoyed the ice cream, but it has a really unique texture. I would describe their ice cream as being almost stretchy. This quality isn’t my favorite, but I see why people rave about how unique it is. In the end, price was just too much for me to justify coming here again, but I liked the vintage look of the shop and how they keep things traditional when making their ice cream
