Vocal teacher to retire after 36 years

Lyn Bouma has been a teacher for 36 years, and has been teaching vocal music at central for twenty eight. After her extensive career as a teacher she is planning to retire.

“When I came to Central I was the only vocal music teacher, so I taught all of the classes. In 2002 the school hired a second teacher.”

Bouma accomplished many achievements during her time at Central winning both the Buffett Award, and being the first teacher of the year. “Even though my husband and daughter have their names on the legacy walk, I got my name on the plaque for teacher of the year.”

The decision to retire was a complicated one with many factors involved. Bouma’s daughter, Claire Bouma, is graduating this year, and knowing that this is the first year she’s eligible to retire from OPS these helped her make a decision.

“Because of some of the new changes that may be coming down the pipe I decided it was time. It feels good to be going out with Dr. Bennett, he’s a good friend of mine and knowing both be going out at the same time gives me comfort.”

After a year of COVID Bouma stated that other opportunities outside of Central have presented themselves to her.

“There’s a position available at my church as an administrative assistant that I’m exploring, but it isn’t available until October. I’ve also contacted some of the local colleges including Nebraska Wesleyan which is where I graduated. I’m meeting with them in June to see if some position arise.”

Bouma’s main goal is to keep on making connections, because that’s her passion. That’s one aspect she’s going to miss most about teaching.

“Interacting with students is really special to me. As a choir director you get to have students more than one year, you get to know them really well and form relationships with them.”

Bouma is not only going to miss teaching, but also Central’s environment. She admires the unique atmosphere and is grateful for the chance to encounter all different kinds of people.

“At Central we don’t all have to agree but we have a very present community regardless. The evident tradition and legacy here is amazing.”

Bouma is not anxious about what will happen to the program after she leaves because she knows it’s going to be left in good hands.

Former Central student Katie Bohn will takeover for Bouma after her retirement. Bohn is a 2017 graduate who participated in CHS singers, A Cappella, Bell Choir, and was the lead in Central’s production of Cinderella. Graduating from Drake University in Des Moines Bouma is confident in her replacement.

“It’s tough to go out this year,” Bouma said. “I have to remember the choir program was here before I came and will continue to be present for as long as Central is here. When I leave I turn the program over to one of my former students. That’s a really special cycle to witness, and I’m honored to be a part of it.”
