Emergancy procedures

December 6, 2019

Now that winter season has hit Omaha, the snow and storms are bound to set in. With the weather comes practically everyone’s favorite… snow days! Or, at least late starts.

“We know every minute of instruction matters, so if we can welcome students for most of the school day while allowing extra time for travel to and from school, we value having the options in our winter weather toolkit.” Charles Wakefield, the Chief of Human Resources Officer, said in an email to all OPS staff.

Wakefield also sent a detailed chart explaining how the day will go in any case of weather making the whole school day unsafe to ensure that teachers are equipped to deal with the time students can be in the building, however short.

In the case that the entire district is closed, the only people who will work are transportation specialists, vehicle maintenance staff, and the administration. The maintenance staff will be on call and the operations staff will work according to the snow removal plans. All workers will be paid for the time that they work.

On days where the schools close, but not the district offices the transportation specialists, vehicle maintenance staff and administration will work, and the maintenance staff will be on call. Nutrition services, non-negotiated staff, and office personal assigned to non-school sites will work. All who work will be paid.

In the case of a late start, everyone will work. All non-negotiated and non-administration staff will start 2 hours late. Administrators, Operations staff, Paraprofessionals and nutrition services will work their normal schedule. Everyone else will work if they are called in.

If an early release is to occur, all non-negotiated and non-administration staff will leave 2 hours early. Administrators, Operations staff, Paraprofessionals and nutrition services will work their normal schedule. All transportation staff and all types of transportation staff will work normal hours unless told otherwise. Security will work whatever schedule is set by their superintendent.

Any staff that cannot make it when they are required will need to use a benefit day. The superintendent may also ask for others to be called in when this schedule may say they are not needed.
