New Central Legacy Walk Opens
October 1, 2019
Last summer, one of the final parts of Central’s expansion project over the last few years was completed: the Legacy Walk on the southeast side of the building. The Legacy Walk is a stairwell that connects the school with 20th and Dodge.
Central Principal Dr. Ed Bennet said, “I see many students walking up that way… I think it’s really helpful.” This is so especially for anyone who uses the senior lot which is just across 20th from the building. The students that park in that lot no longer have to walk to school through grass, dew, snow or ice.
The staircase is one of the final pieces of the privately funded $19,500,000 new addition project that began in 2016. Bennet explains, “I think it’s a great addition, I think it blends nicely. I like the contrast of the materials that were used like the dark and the light. I think it looks great with the new addition. It doesn’t look exactly like it, but it’s very complementary.”
Bennet was impressed with how the staircase represents a lot of different ideas. He describes, “I think it represents a mixing of the past, the present and the future. We have alums who saw a need and they saw a way to make it happen, and they did make it happen. (The staircase) benefits students in the present, and there are the future students who look at that and go, someday maybe I’ll go up those steps. So, I think it’s a great blend of those three.”
The staircase is named after Doc Moller, who was principal of Central from 1968 to 1995. It is officially named The Dr. G.E. and Betty Moller Legacy Walkway.
