Eggs deemed less healthy than previously thought

December 19, 2017

Breakfast is known as the most important meal of the day because it kick-starts your metabolism and helps you process energy throughout the day. Although it is vital to gain nutrients in this meal, many Americans are not aware of the actual nutritional value of the food they eat. Eggs are one of the most common breakfast foods in America. Overall, they may seem like a strengthening and full of protein snack, but eggs are actually much worse for your health than you may think.
The main health issue associated with eggs is an elevated cholesterol. Scientists suggest that egg consumption should be limited to one a day because there are 186 grams of cholesterol in a single egg (recommended daily cholesterol intake is 300 grams). Additionally, eggs are high in saturated fats and cannot be easily digested by the body and cause an increased risk for heart disease.
For those who seek to lower their cholesterol intake, there is a product known as eggbeaters which is purely egg whites. Although this may seem like a healthier alternative, it is actually a more artificial and damaging to your body. Egg beaters are processed and unnatural and lack the nutrients needed to digest them, so they harm your body even more.
An additional issue that is not often taken into consideration is the ethical standpoints behind eggs. Chickens are kept in confined spaces and treated terribly. They are kicked around and driven mad by the restricted spaces. Their beaks and toes are often cut off so that they will not be able to harm other chickens within these tightly packed areas of living. Just because a package of eggs says “cage-free chickens” does not mean that the animals were treated well. This is sometimes even more detrimental to their health because they are taken out of cages and instead packed into small spaces within barns or extremely limited fields.
Another unhealthy factor in these chicken’s lifestyles that is promoted on egg cartons is the fact that they are “vegetarian-fed”. Unlike humans, chickens have a natural diet which includes sources of meat from other creatures. Being fed strictly grains does not properly nourish them and is a contributing factor to the chickens going crazy and harming themselves or others around them. Overall, ethically, eggs are not a good choice for someone’s diet and the only way to stop this unhealthy regime for these animals is to boycott the egg industry. Farm-fresh eggs would be healthier in spirit, yet one’s body would still be negatively affected and the best way to avoid egg-induced health problems is to refrain from eating them all together.
Although these chicken’s situations may make some people feel sympathy, others may not have justified ethics and may view the entirety of the situation as a joke. Overall, humans are no different than chickens and all creatures should have the same freedom of a natural life, rather than a confined, drug-induced sad life. Eggs are not only detrimental to your heath but also to the health of the chicken. Eggbeaters have proven to be an even worse product, so the best thing you can do for yourself is to refrain from eating eggs and other animal products so that you may live a much healthier life.
