Deli opens doors at new location, values quality over convenience
October 1, 2015
This school year Central students have another close place to go for a bite to eat. Star Deli’s original location is at 6114 Military Ave and another location opened one block northwest of Central’s campus, in the space previously occupied by Corner Creperie.
Star Deli is most known for their delicious artisan sandwiches. They also serve a variety of soups and salads. Star Deli plans to start opening at 8:00am and serve coffee in the mornings.
The history of Star Deli lies in the hands of the owner, Jay Muller and his dedicated employees. Sean O’Hara, is the manager at of the new location. O’Hara said the history behind Star Deli is “to create a full menu of artisan sandwiches, one for every taste and personality.”
Their Benson location has an art gallery, which opened in 2012. Muller and his employees decided to combine a sandwich shop with an art gallery to become more local and open with their customers. The art is all from local artists, which Muller says gives back to the community.
Star Deli wanted local artists to be able to express their talent and have other people come check it out, while eating a delicious sandwich of course.
With Star Deli making all of their food from scratch, quality comes before convenience. “It is more time consuming and there is a lot of prepping,” O’Hara said. However, they do save a little more money.
Star Deli’s goal is to try and keep all of their ingredients local, fresh and almost everything homemade. They purchase all of their ingredients from a wide range of local food markets and make everything from scratch.
Star Deli catered to Central in the past and plans expanding by catering to Creighton in the future.
As of now, Star Deli does plan to be open in other locations in the future.
